Science PBL (Project Based Learning)

Our Class Project

We have been studying animals in our class for several weeks.  We have discussed animal classification.  In addition, we discussed what "endangered" means.  Our class wanted to do something to help the endangered animals here in North Carolina.  We went to the media center and researched the endangered animals living here in North Carolina.  We discovered a lot of species that are endangered.

My class wanted to help endangered animals.  We decided we would make fall/Halloween crafts out of recycled products at home and sell them at our upcoming fall festival.   They made some wonderful crafts and we sold them for $2.00 each at the festival.  We raised $50.00, so we will be adopting "Miracle" a zebra at the NC Zoo in Asheboro.   The students are so excited!  I am so glad that even these young students see the need to protect their environment by recycling and want to protect animals.

General Information

General Information

Snacks:

As a reminder, please provide snack for the entire class on your designated day. (noted on the calendar) I would prefer if student did not bring juice into the classroom for snack time because it tends to attract ants.  They can still drink them in the cafeteria as part of their packed lunch.

Arrival and Dismissal:

Students will do directly to the cafeteria or gym in the morning.  Students will be dismissed from these areas to the classroom at 7:45 A.M.  Students will be dismissed in the afternoon at 2:40 P.M. in the front of the building.  Parents are asked to wait outside.  We will bring the students to you or their name will be called to enter the car.

B.I.R.D Folder:

Your child will be bringing a blue folder home daily and it will need to be checked by you and returned the next day.  Inside there will be designated areas such as homework, communication log, behavior report, graded papers, etc.  Please help your child learn this important part of being a responsible student.

Homework:

First graders do not generally have much homework unless they need more practice, did not do their work in school or have been absent.  There will however be occasional homework and your child will know that this should be returned.  Please have your child to read at least 15 minutes each night.

Spelling:  Will not begin until October.  Your child will be able to select three choices from the list inside the B.I.R.D folder with their spelling list.

Recess:

We will have recess everyday.  Our recess time is not until 1:50 P.M.  please dress your child according to the weather forecast.

Enrichment:

We will have P.E. once a week.  Mr. Friedman asks that you have your child to wear tennis shoes on that day.  Please review the calendar for what day we will have P.E.  Other Enrichment classes will be Music and Art.

Class Promise

Our Class Promise      (Adopted September, 2011)

When we care about each other and our classroom, we share, we take turns, and help each other learn.  We listen carefully, always try our best, work hard, and give each other praise and have fun together.  We know that everyone makes mistakes, and we won't laugh or make fun of them.  We think about what is right and try our best to do what is right.  This is who we are, even when NO ONE is watching!

Meet Your Teacher

Kasey and Preston
My name is Lisa Snyder.

I was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and moved to Rockingham County  when I was 13 years old. I grew up in Greensboro and loved visiting my grandparents who lived in Winston-Salem.   Now, I live on a farm where we have chickens, dogs, cats  and guineas.  My mother and step-father lived here in Rockingham County.  I lost my father in February, 2013 to cancer, he lived in Tucson, AZ.  I have a half-sister and step-mother who still live there.

I graduated from Madison-Mayodan High School  which is known as Dalton McMichael High School. I began teaching  at Stone-Eden Christian School in the four-year old kindergarten.  I worked there for seven years teaching the various grades of preschool through fourth grade.  I received my Bachelor's Degree at Western Governors University in Interdisciplinary Studies for K-8.   This will be my third year at Huntsville Elementary.  The last two years I was a fifth grade teacher, I am looking forward to teaching in first grade this year.   It is my desire to inspire these young men and women to be leaders, to do their best and aide them in achieving their goals.  I want all of my students to love school and have the desire to do their best in whatever they set out to accomplish.

This year I will celebrate my 20th Anniversary with my husband and high school sweetheart, Kevin Snyder.    We dated in high school and was married seven years later after we graduated.   We have two wonderful children,  Kasey, my daughter, who is a junior at McMichael and my son, Preston who is the 8th grade at Western Rockingham Middle School. It is hard to believe how fast your children grow!  Our house is completed with my sweet cat, Murphy, who is named after the Atlanta Braves Third Baseman, Dale Murphy.  Yes, I am a Braves fan!
